Forest Green - 2022 Concert Series in the Garden
curated by June Bender & Jeff Carpineta
Please join us for our 1st Annual 5 part music series in the Emerald Wildflower Garden. We’ve lined up some incredible shows - some of the most special voices and instrumentalists in the City.
It’s time to be together in a lovely place among the trees, plants, birds and bees. We’ll have food and beverages of all sorts, so come hungry.
All shows are a suggested donation of $20.00 and all funds go directly to the artists and some lovely food for you. If you’re in a financial pinch - don’t worry. You being there is more important.
A special thank you to all the musicians who are planning to make these evenings amazing - and make this a better year of life.
Thanks also to Serena Niesley who offered her gorgeous print soft, at night for our poster. Her work is here.
See you at the garden.
-June

• July 9th • Saturday • In the Garden • Gates 6pm • Music 6:45pm & 7:45pm •
2319 Emerald St • Dauphin/York El Train One Block Away • 3 Blocks From Frankford Ave
Samantha Rise (they/them) is a black, gender-expansive performer and art activist, based in Philadelphia. Samantha’s passion for music and community building are the heart of their work; a student of jazz, improvisation, social justice movements and the music that drives them, Samantha encourages a unique vulnerability with their audiences, reminding us all that music is our birthright, and a technology of healing, transformative justice and self-determination.
An award-winning songcatcher, Rise's music is sensual and staggering in its accounts of what it means to allow ourselves to be known; giving voice to heartbreak, hope and all the spaces between, wherever words fail. Through their music, Samantha Rise invites us to listen for our own music, and to sing in the world we know is possible.
Rise's debut release, Brighter Days, arrived in four installments over the solstice and equinox in 2019. Their music is available on Apple Music, Spotify, BandCamp and Soundcloud.
Matt Davis is a guitarist, composer and educator based in the Philadelphia area. Matt's original work has been hailed as “Inspired” by Downbeat magazine, “incredible” by the Philadelphia Daily News, and “eloquent” by Jazztimes Magazine. Matt is a recipient of numerous awards and honors including grants from ASCAP, the American Composers Forum, Chamber Music America, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and The National Parks Service. Matt currently serves as Adjunct Associate Professor of Jazz Guitar Performance and Chair of the Guitar Department at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. In addition to having studied under the notable jazz educator Dennis Sandole, Matt earned his bachelor's degree in jazz guitar from Temple University in Philadelphia, and his Masters degree from the Manhattan School of Music. He has performed all over the US as well as in China, India, South Korea, Europe and Mexico. Additionally, Matt is a published author, having had his writings on jazz music published in magazines such as Downbeat and Jazziz. He lives in NJ with his wife and two young, curious, energetic and hysterical sons.
The Sway of Rivers is Matt's new original project for several guitars, two vocalists and percussion. This event will be the first ever public performance of this ensemble.

Birdie Busch's enthusiasm for the stories of humans through the medium of song has been her main connection to this world and how she has decided to navigate the rich experience of her relationships to people, places and objects. Philadelphia has always been an ongoing muse. She has come to treat this city as its own country, or perhaps its own world, and she has come to know so many of its people, all rich and meandering in their journey, and feel akin to them. She sees it all through an acute and unique sense of memory.
Her striving to reveal things in a way that doesn’t seem like a dissertation but rather a keyhole, always makes her work seem fresh and interesting–a vivid angle that comes from a deep understanding for what connects us all in this great metropolis and beyond. She has put out records on adventurous independents like Bar/None, Styles Upon Styles, PIAPTK, and Perpetual Doom. She is always up for joining other talented folks that seek to make great work, inspire people, and see what happens.

May 2022
KooF and Melanie Hsu
• May 21st • Saturday • In the garden • Gates 6pm • Music 6:45pm & 7:45pm •
2319 Emerald St • Dauphin/York El Train 1 Block away • 3 blocks from Frankford Ave
KooF is a multi-genre, multi-instrumentalist that revels in acoustics turned electric, and monophonics turned polyphonic. Solo improvisations transform into esoteric pop covers, then meld into mind-blending mashups. KooF makes folk/soul music for the people and mind-expanding sonic waves for everyone else. All that with a horn and a lil electricity.
Mel Hsu is a sonic painter of impossible worlds. Mel comes from a lineage of healers who taught her how to sing herself out of the darkness. As a multi-instrumentalist, Mel ventures from her classical roots into unexpected collaborations. Mel’s restless spirit finds adventure across time zones and oceans as musical and administrative support for others who inspire her. www.melaniehsu.com
